Jorge Luis Santiago is an independent photographer from the small village of Guelatao de Juárez in Oaxaca, Mexico. He first came into contact with photography at the age of 15, during a workshop entitled "La Mirada Interior" (The Interior Gaze) which attempted to introduce the medium of photography into the indigenous communities in Oaxaca state. From 2004 onwards he has dedicated himself entirely to documentary photography, working with local and international newspapers and magazines. His photographs have been shown collectively and individually in Mexico, Spain, Cuba and the United States. In 2007 he had the opportunity to move to Beijing, China, where he documented the radical transformations in the city and its people in light of the impending Olympics. Upon his return to Oaxaca in 2008, he was offered a scholarship to document the way in which basketball functions to reinforce relationships between Oaxacan villages in the Sierra Juárez and Mexican migrant workers living in the United States; this project will be shown next year. Using material accumulated in China and Oaxaca, Jorge founded Fotosoaxaca.com in 2009. Fotos Oaxaca is an image bank of documentary photos from Oaxaca, China, Malaysia, Cuba, and other places Jorge has traveled and lived. The site will continue to expand throughout the coming year.
